At Thornhill Primary we have lots of outdoor space which we can use as an addition to our classroom learning. We have a wildlife area, for which we have built animal homes. Our Early Years area is full of fun things to explore, we have a potting shed and huge sandpit. We also have an outdoor classroom in the courtyard, where we eat our lunches in the summer. We have lots of grass to play on and use for sport and we have recently been given some money to help create a reflective, nurturing garden which we are designing ourselves. All pupils really love the tyre park which was funded by the National Lottery.
Beyond the School building:
We regularly take our lessons outside the school boundaries.
We carry out a range of tasks in Thornhill Village including litter picking, planting and carol singing in the park. We explore the village as part of geography and history lessons too.
We are regular visitors at Florence Mine, we go to many of their art exhibitions. We also travel further afield including trips to South lakes' Zoo and Cockermouth to explore tourism and Allonby and St Bees to look at Seaside habitats. We also regularly visit local farms, supermarkets and places of interest.
Every year we all walk to Beckermet Cemetary as part of our commemorations of Remembrance Day. We hold a two miniutes silence.
The Early Years Foundation Stage:
Our Early years pupils access all outdoor space and also have several rooms for inside learning.
We are lucky to have a great many rooms available for learning. Each class has a dedicated classroom but we also have rooms for small group work or to enable classes to be divided for differentiated learning.
Our School Hall:
Our School Hall is a a very busy space.
As well as being used for productions, the Hall hosts our assemblies including the weekly- 'Good Work' Assembly which is open to the community. We also use it as a dining hall, for PE, for Circle time and for whole school events such as the Christmas Fayre and Macmillan Charity Coffee mornings.
