Curriculum Intent- Design Technology

At Thornhill and Arlecdon Primary School we believe that children should have the chance to produce solutions to problems using their imagination and creativity. We believe that Design Technology provides a way for children to experiment, take risks, and feel the sense of accomplishment that comes when they use their skills and knowledge find an innovative solution.

Our Early Years Curriculum enables children to explore and develop in knowledge and skill through themes.

We aim for children to have the following skills and knowledge by the end of the EYFS:

  • Talk about what they want to make
  • Plan the tools and media they will use
  • Evaluate their work once finished

We aim for all children to have the following skills and knowledge by the end of Key Stage One:

  • Talk about their ideas and plan a design verbally
  • Draw, use a template or ICT tools to produce a design for their product
  • Explain how their design fulfils the design criteria (e.g. a toy that moves: which part of your design makes it move?)
  • Talk about what works in their design, and what could be improved, doing the same for existing products

We aim for all children to have the following skills and knowledge by the end of Key stage Two:

  • Research and develop their own criteria for a purposeful design
  • Draw or use ICT tools to produce sketches, cross-sectional or exploded diagrams for their product
  • Accurately use a range of tools, techniques and media to create the product
  • Evaluate their own and other people’s designs
