Your child will be set regular mathematical homework tasks according to their age and ability. Please support your child with these. Please let staff know if you are concerned that your child is struggling with the work sent home.
There have been many changes in the way that calculation strategies are taught in Primary Schools. You may find that your child uses a different method to the one you were taught at school. Please encourage your child to discuss their method with you. You may wish to look at out calculations policy or speak to staff for more guidance.
It is easy for you to support your child through-out their Primary School life, in the development of mental calculation skills. In the Early Years it may just be in pointing to, and re-inforcing the names of numbers you can see in the local area. You may wish to sing counting rhymes or songs with your child or for them to help your sort washing into pairs or colours.
As your child gets older you can help them learn number bonds to 20 by testing them with simple addition and subtraction problems, you could learn the multiplication tables together, teach them how to tell the time or allow them to handle money and change in real-life situations.
There are also many mental maths games on the internet which are suitable for children at a variety of levels and ages.
